WORKSHOP: A GIANT LEAPP IN SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINE

A Giant LEAPP in School-wide Discipline

Tuesday, April 4, 10:45-11:45 a.m.
Steven Klein Director of Safe and Drug Free Schools, School District U-46
Carolyn Pereira, Executive Director Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago

With the support of a U.S. Department of Education 21st Century grant, Illinois School District U-46, in conjunction with the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago, has developed an alternative to out of school suspension program. This program gives upper elementary and middle school students an alternative of three Saturday mornings of intensive instruction in lieu of the traditional out of school suspension for a breach of school rules. The curriculum is a mixture of traditional law-related education, conflict resolution and anger management. There is mandatory parent participation and a police partnership in the instruction. This session will attempt to explain the program, as well as the curriculum development process. Preliminary evaluation data will be shared.
