WORKSHOP: TEACHING ABOUT JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE

Teaching About Judicial Independence

Wednesday, April 5, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Rebecca J. Fanning, Community and Educational Outreach Manager, Administrative Office of the United States Courts
Nisan Chavkin, Associate Director, Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago

This workshop on judicial independence asks participants to rule as either life-tenured or elected judges after viewing a video of a mock trial involving the search of a student’s backpack in a public school. Participants will be presented with negative media coverage, public criticism by elected officials, opinion polls, and other pressures, then discuss what impact if any their term of office had on their decision-making process. The workshop offers a preview of a national video conference on August 4, 2000, sponsored by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts and the Constitutional Rights Foundation with content contributions from the Massachusetts Corporation for Public Telecommunications. Federal courthouses in various regions of the country may choose to participate. Find out how you can involve teachers, law-related professionals, and other community leaders in your state.
