| International Curriculum Writing: Case Studies from South Africa, Eastern Europe,
and the NIS Wednesday, April 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
David McQuoid-Mason, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa
Ed OBrien, Executive Director, Street Law, Inc.
Experience what is was like for U.S. law curriculum to be adapted and used in South
Africa during the throes of Apartheid. What difference did Mandelas release make in
the content of the curriculum? Could democratic principles and human rights then be
taught? What is the future of this curriculum in the New South Africa? Can similar
curriculum be adapted and used in Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union?
Participants will discuss these questions and experience firsthand some of the LRE
exercises that have been developed in one country and then adapted for another.
Controversial issues will be discussed, including: what if the educational culture of a
country does not support the use of interactive methods of teaching? What if many people
in a country see the language of human rights as making the country and people less
prosperous, do you then not include human rights in the curriculum?
