| Program Type: |
Major (Honours) |
| Program Status: |
Established in 1975, this program leads to an honours B.A.
degree, with a required complementary major in a social science or humanities department. |
| Statement of Intellectual Structure: |
| "The program offers several interdisciplinary social science courses
specifically developed to focus on the interaction of law and society, utilizing social
science theories and concepts to provide a basis for understanding legal behaviour and
institutions. In addition, the program incorporates courses offered by departments in the
Faculty of Arts which deal with more narrowly defined issues, such as Canadian
constitutional development, human rights, and public policy and jurisprudence. The
interdisciplinary courses, which constitute the core offerings, are team-taught and use
materials from many sources and with a wide range of content. These materials have
recently been published as Readings in Law and Society, edited by Jane Banfield. In
each sector of the core courses and in the readings, social science theories are followed
by contrasting views of contemporary legal issues to be analyzed using the theory
introduced. The program is not related to, and is not a prerequisite for, admission to the
large Faculty of Law at York University. Rather, the Law and Society Program is part of a
liberal arts curriculum and views law as part of culture and a significant element of
society. It is designed for the thinking student whatever her or his career orientation or
undergraduate major." |
