Statement of Intellectual Structure:
“The Legal Studies curriculum focuses both on the large, complex institutions of government and society and on the small, routine interactions that make up our daily lives with others. For, it is in the lives of real people that the theory and practice of law meet in politics and society. The major in Legal Studies examines the ways law is used to settle disputes. It addresses the major justifications given over the centuries for obeying law and honoring its requirements. It gives students the skills and knowledge necessary to understand the way lawyers think and practice their craft. And it relates both the theory and the practice of law to the political and social communities in which laws, lawyers, and judges actually impact people’s rights.”
