The Riverside Law and Society Program was established in
1975, and offers students an interdisciplinary liberal arts approach to the study of legal
and law-like relationships and institutions. Students may earn a B.A. in one of the
following combinations: Anthropology/L&S; History/L&S; Philosophy/L&S;
Political Science/L&S; Sociology/L&S. There is also a B.S. option with the
Sociology/L&S combination. |
| Statement of Intellectual Structure: |
| [The following is a statement for the Philosophy/L&S option. Other
statements are available for the other concentration combinations.] "A
Philosophy-Law and Society major serves three principal purposes. The first is to provide
a coherent and rigorous program of philosophic studies which has legal and law-like
institutions as its primary subject matter. The second purpose is to acquaint students
with perspectives necessary for scholarly, conceptual and empirical research in the study
of law and society, with emphasis upon criteria in terms of which laws and societies are
susceptible of identification and critical appraisal. Thirdly, the purpose of a
Philosophy-Law and Society major is to promote precision and range in oral written
expression; and to promote the capacity to reason analytically.
It is our hope that Philosophy-Law and Society majors will be well-equipped to provide
constructive criticism of legal and political systems, and will be able to relate the
study of law to the larger study of the human social order." |
