Statement of Intellectual Structure:
"The Legal Studies Program provides students with a broad understanding of the legal system. We examine both U.S. and international law. We study the judicial system from trial courts to the Supreme Court, as well as alternatives to our legal process... We're not training students for legal careers; we're concerned with the role law plays in U.S. culture. In particular, we're interested in the relationships between law and politics, and law and society... Students in the Legal Studies Program will experience the law in action, not merely in the classroom. Our fieldwork course places students in law-related internships with organizations such as La Raza Centro Legal, the Legal Aid Society, the Prisoners' Union, the Tenderloin Legal Clinic, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, and the American Civil Liberties Union."
