Spring 2003: "Access Denied: Should Youth Access to the Internet be Restricted?"
Participants
North Henderson High School - Hendersonville, NC
Class: English II Honors
North Henderson High School, home of the Knights, is located in rural Henderson County in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Our school website is www.henderson.k12.nc.us. We are participating in this summit for Mrs. West's Honors English II. Our class is composed of 31 sophomores. Our school has 864 students; 84 percent are white, 12 percent are Hispanic, 2 percent are black, 1 percent are multiracial, and less than 1 percent are Asian or American Indian.
We are proud of our achievements. The North Henderson Knights have won team and/or individual state championships in sports every year since the school's establishment in 1993. Approximately 50 percent of the student body participates in 27 different sports. Our students recently earned the WLOS Spirit Award. In 2002-2003, North Henderson participated in regional mock trial competition for the first time and finished in second place. We have had two students as finalists in the state writing contest in the past 10 years. Every year the North math team has won first, second, or third place in the Western Regional Math Contest. For five of the ten years, students have competed at state level. Over 70 percent of North students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes receive college credit.
The population of Henderson County is 91,267 with a balanced ratio of ages. The majority of the population is white, followed by Hispanics (5.5 percent) and blacks (3.1 percent). The median household income is $34,733. Our industry relies mainly on apples, tourism, manufacturing, and retirees.
Henderson County grows 75 percent of the apples grown in the state and is recognized as one of the largest apple producing counties in the country. During the Labor Day weekend the Henderson County Apple Festival draws 200,000 tourists to the area. We are a Southern state, but we like to brag that we have four seasons (thus we miss a few days of school each year because of snow).
By participating in the summit, "Access Denied: Should Youth Access to the Internet be Restricted?" we hope to acquire knowledge about First Amendment rights in general and, more specifically, about Internet censorship. By researching other countries and their Internet restrictions, we will be able to learn more about the world around us.
