Hampden Academy - Hampden, ME
Class: Law and Ethics

Our Law and Ethics class is a semester elective, and has 17 students, a mix of seniors, juniors, and one sophomore. Mrs. Kathryn King is our teacher.

Hampden Academy is a four-year, public high school in Hampden, Maine. Built in 1803, our school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our student body comes from three towns--Newburgh, Winterport, and Hampden. We are located in central Maine, just south of Bangor, one of Maine's largest cities. About an hour southeast of us is Acadia National Park; about an hour and a half north is Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. We are about half an hour from the University of Maine and the Maine Center for the Arts. The combined population of our three towns is approximately 11,150. Because our communities are small and rural, there is not a lot of crime. We have a student enrollment of 775; 95% of our students are Caucasian, with the remaining 5% made up of Thai, African-American, and Latino students. Our student body is growing so fast that we're experiencing an overcrowding problem, resulting in a growing number of portable classrooms around the main building. We have a closed campus and are block scheduled, with 80-minute classes that meet every other day. Our school offers an alternative education program which serves 16 students. 27 H.A. students are enrolled in a co-op program where they attend classes half-time and go to work half-time. 55 of our students attend the local United Technologies Center, where they study trade skills such as welding, carpentry, health care, and computer programming. Our curriculum in a number of subjects includes AP and honors courses.

H.A.'s mascot is the Bronco. Our school colors are purple and white. Hampden is well-known around the state for academic excellence. Our jazz band and chamber singers are outstanding. Our athletic teams are excellent, as are our mock trial team and Junior Classical League. H.A. has two student newspapers, one faculty-advised, the other independently student-run. We have a strong sense of commitment to our communities, which can be seen through the projects of our Key Club, Civil Rights Team, and Greensleaves, our environmental group. Each year we host a number of foreign exchange students. One of this year's exchange students is from Norway and is in our Law and Ethics class. Famous Hampden Academy graduates include Stephen King, horror writer; Dorothea Dix, reformer; Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first vice president; and Mike Bordick, currently playing shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles.
