Galesburg High School - Galesburg, IL
Class: Journalism

Galesburg High School is the home of the Silver Streaks and our colors are silver and gold. Our symbol is a lightning bolt. The song that is associated with it is the opening of the William Tell Overture (Hi Yo, Silver Away!). There are 1,400 students in the high school.

Our town has about 34,000 people. There is a good mixture of backgrounds—Hispanic, African American, European, etc. are all part of the people who built the community.

Our community was in the national news recently because our major employer, Maytag announced that it was closing and moving most of its operation to Mexico and to Amana, Iowa. That has resulted in much uncertainty.

Most of our class members are seniors with a few juniors and sophomores in the class. Our high school newspaper has an unusual name: The Budget.

Trivia about Galesburg:

  • The inventor of the Ferris wheel is from our town.
  • Carl Sandburg, a great American poet, was born here.
  • We have a summer festival called Railroad Days and one in the fall that features a major fly-in of Stearman aircraft.
  • There is a book called I Love Galesburg in the Springtime. It was written by Jack Finney who also wrote The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.
