Spring 2003: "Access Denied: Should Youth Access to the Internet be Restricted?"
Participants
Thomas A. Edison High School - Alexandria, VA
Class: Virginia/US Government
Our school is one the 24 high schools in Fairfax County, Virginia. Alexandria is a suburban community located about 12 miles from Washington D.C. We
enjoy many advantages from living so close to our nation's capitol (great educational opportunities and high profile visitors) and some distinct disadvantages (traffic, traffic and more traffic).
Our student body consists of approximately 1700 students from virtually every part of the globe. We are exceptionally diverse with the largest segments of our population being White, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian. Our school boasts of a very competitive sports program (National District football champs three years in a row and an All-American wrestler), art & music program (second place in the east-coast theater production and best marching band in VA in Chapter 12), and academic program (our school is fully accredited, we are an International Baccalaureate school with 100% of full I
B candidates receiving IB diplomas, two National Merit Finalists and the National District Academic Team champions).
Our school is extremely fortunate to have support from a local businessman
who has poured his passion and money into upgrading our technology. We now
have over 100 wireless laptops with internet access from anywhere in the school (SO much better than going to the computer lab--if we could ever get
it reserved!). We also have SmartBoard technology in almost every classroom.
We are very interested in participating in the summit and look forward to sharing
our thoughts, ideas, and opinions with the rest of the participants.
