Class: Current Issues
East Grand Rapids High School is a public school located in West Michigan, located in an urban area of approximately 3.4 square miles. 10,800 people occupy East Grand Rapids, and 975 of these people are high school students. The student population has very little diversity. 1% of the students are African Americans, 1% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 95% White. The socio-economic class for a majority of students is upper-middle class.
The high school's academic program is highly respected in Michigan. About 98% of the students graduate and 95% go on to attend some type of college or university (40% out of state). The average GPA for the class of 2003 is 3.278. The average ACT score is 24.8 and the average SAT score is 1147. Athletics is also very important to East Grand Rapids students. EGRHS holds 92 state championship titles. Great pride is held in this school for both athletics and academics.
The Current Issues class which will be participating in the National Online Youth Summit is made up of 28 students, taught by Mrs. Janice Rocque. Most of the students are juniors or seniors. During class we discuss important national and world news events. The class has slightly liberal opinions on most issues, but conservative views are heard, too. There are very strong opinions voiced in most debates, especially ones dealing with the freedom of speech and expression. We are excited about sharing our views and learning from other schools around the country.
