Participants
Broughton High School - Raleigh, NC
Class: Journalism
Located on an historic site in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina,
Needham Broughton High School was founded in 1929, making it the
oldest existing public high school in the city. Broughton's long
history gives it a legacy of excellence in academics, athletics,
and the arts. It recently became recognized as an International
Baccalaureate World School, an exceptionally challenging program
that emphasizes global connectedness. Known as the "Capitals,"
Broughton athletes have always been competitive in the state and
sometimes in the country; last year, the school had six All-Americans
and won several state championships. Famous Broughton alumni include
the basketball legend "Pistol" Pete Maravich and current
Duke University basketball star Shavlik Randolph. The fine arts
department is also outstanding, with a band that earned international
acclaim at a competition in Amsterdam in 2001.
The Embers, known for their hit, "Carolina Girls," originated
here. John Edwards, Colin Powell, James Taylor, Martin Luther
King, Jr., Jon Bon Jovi and Al Gore have visited Broughton.
Broughton is influenced by its proximity to the Research Triangle
Park, a nationally renowned technology center made up by the cities
of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, as well as nearby Duke University,
North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. A diverse school, 66% of Broughton students are
white, 24% black, 5% Asian, 4% Hispanic, and 1% other. There
is a slight majority of girls, 51% female to 49% male.
By participating in the Online Summit, our class is hoping to
research and gain knowledge about First Amendment rights and compare
our opinions with those of students nationwide through online
discussion.
