ABA Division for Public Education: NOYS 2001: Participants: Tupelo High School

Spring 2001: Does Capital Punishment Have a Future?

Participants
Tupelo High School - Tupelo, MS
Class: Debate

We are enrolled in Mrs. Bishop’s debate class at Tupelo High School in Tupelo, MS, and we also have a student teacher, Ms. Danielle Bessey, this semester. Tupelo is famous for being the birthplace of the “King of Rock & Roll”, Elvis Presley. Tupelo also has a professional hockey team, the T-Rex, who are competitively ranked in the WPHL. The city of Tupelo has 36,817 people; however, because of the many large furniture and manufacturing industries located here, the daily population grows to over 150,000.

Last year, Tupelo High School was awarded the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Education. Our school is located on 73 acres of land, with 9 buildings and 1887 students; 66 percent of the students are Caucasian, 33 percent are African-American, and less than 1 percent are Asian, Hispanic, or Latino.

Tupelo High places much importance on excellence in education, but also takes pride in extra-curricular student activities such as clubs and athletic teams. Our boys’ soccer team has won the state title 3 out of the last 4 years, and our girls’ swim team has won back-to-back state championships. If you would like to know more about our school, you can visit our website at http://ths.tupeloschools.com.

We are the first school in Mississippi to be chosen for this online debate, and our team is excited to participate.
