Spring 2001: Does Capital Punishment Have a Future?

Participants
North Mecklenburg High School - Huntersville, NC
Class: Advanced Placement U.S. Government

Huntersville is located 12 miles north of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County in the southern Piedmont region of N.C. It is currently experiencing tremendous growth and has increased its population to approximately 30,000. Its proximity to Charlotte and convenient access to Lake Norman make it a perfect location for newcomers to this area. It has good schools, low crime, and a multitude of employment opportunities.

North Mecklenburg High School is celebrating its 5oth anniversary this year. We are a very diverse school challenging student potential by offering the International Baccalaureate program, Advanced Placement, Academically Gifted and Advanced level classes as well as the Regular level classes. We have more than 2500 students - 71% White, 24.5% Black, 2.2% Hispanic, 1.6% Asian, .5% American Indian and .2% Multi-racial. 86% of the students graduating from North go on to continue their education at universities, community colleges, and technical schools. We house an Air Force ROTC program, a variety of workforce development courses and one of the two auto diesel courses offered in N.C. We also have an award winning Culinary Arts program.

This year we have been victorious Vikings. Our football team made it to the state playoffs. Our basketball team has won our conference title and will be competing in the state playoffs. Our swim teams are conference champions. But our strength doesn't stop there. We have also met the state's exemplary standards for quality education for the past two years.

One of the most noticeable features on our campus is the addition of approximately 50 mobile units to house the growing population. We also have THE ROCK which gets painted almost daily to commemorate events occurring in our school or community. There are 7 large one-story buildings and a gymnasium that creates our campus environment.

Our seniors have a powder puff football game, sleep-in day during testing for underclassmen, senior breakfast with entertainment provided by the faculty, senior picnic and prom. They have a scholarship drive called the Angels of '97 in remembrance of five students of the Class of 1997 who died before they reached graduation.

We have occasional fun events - early class dismissal for a quarter to raise money for ones in need within our school community, a D.J. during all three lunches for special occasions, pep rallies, and special programs that are presented for us. We have an annual fundraising barbecue that raises money for use by the PTSA. They normally allow the teachers to purchase additional resources for our student body. All students who sell at least 8 tickets are allowed to leave school early to "deliver" barbecue. This year's barbecue accumulated about $43,000.

One of the students in our class placed third in our first ever Mr. North Meck pageant. The young men in this pageant presented a humorous variety of talents and poise rarely found in a pageant. The pageant raised $2,000 that will go toward funding the cost of another site for the senior breakfast.

We're looking forward to the online summit but are currently having technical difficulties. We have not been in any other meeting of this sort and are anxiously awaiting it to begin. Be sure to visit our website. (www.cms.k12.nc.us/allschools/north/default.html )
