Class: Philosophy

We are Mr. Harwood's Philosophy class at Mascoma Valley Regional High School in West Canaan, New Hampshire. West Canaan is located in the Upper Connecticut River Valley not far from Dartmouth College and Mount Sunapee. Our School district is composed of five small to very small towns. The area is economically diverse of about 10,000 people.

A number of the residence of the area work at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and Dartmouth College. Also located in our area is Timkan Areo-Space. There is also a small amount of agriculture, we even have an Emu farm.

There are about 500 students that attend the school of which 107 students in the senior class. The school's population consists of 99.17% caucasian, .13% African American, .26% Hispanic American, .32% Asian American and .13% Native American. We also are hosting four exchange students this year from Finland, Germany, Kyrgystan, and the Netherlands.

Extracurricular activities play an important role in our small school. Our Men's and Women's Basketball team are in the finals for the state class M championship. The Women's team has appeared in the p layoffs the last five years in a row and have won the championship a number of times. One member of the Men's basketball team scored his 1000th point this year. Both teams were undefeated at home this year. The school's Mock Trial Team was in the state finals last year and are seeded # 3 this year. The school's Odyssey of the mind team went to the National competition last year. We also have one of our senior girls as a member of the Junior National Kayak Team.

For entertainment there is much for us to do. There is down hill skiing at a number of ski areas, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, hiking and numerous other outdoor sports. Mt. Cardigan, the southern most of the White Mountains is located here as well as the northern most Shaker Village and the "World Famous" Ruggles Mine.
