Spring 2001: Does Capital Punishment Have a Future?
Participants
Hampden Academy - Hampden, ME
Class: Law and Ethics
Hampden Academy is a four-year, public high school, founded in 1803. Around 750
students attend Hampden Academy (H.A.) from three communities: Hampden, a bedroom
community of Bangor, one of central Maine's largest cities; Winterport, an old river town
on the Penobscot River; and Newburgh, an old farming community. The combined population of
our three communities is approximately 11,000. Our senior class is 180 strong. There is
little racial diversity among our student body (97% of our students are Caucasian);
however there is much socioeconomic diversity. Our school's team name and mascot is the
Bronco; our team colors are purple and white. Famous people associated with Hampden
Academy include Stephen King, horror author and former H.A. English teacher; Newburgh
native and H.A. graduate Ricky Craven, who races on the NASCAR circuit; and Winterport
native and H.A. graduate Mike Bordick, shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles. Hannibal
Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first Vice President, practiced law in Hampden. Hampden Academy
is one of the top schools academically in the State of Maine; we also have many
outstanding teams and clubs. Our women's track team is one of the best in the state. Our
mock trial team is the 2000 state champion and will be competing in national competition
in Omaha, Nebraska in May. Our school's civil rights team recently sponsored a
"Civility and Inclusion Week", where our entire student body focused on issues
related to tolerance of diversity. We are Mrs. Kathryn King's Law and Ethics class. Our
class focuses on the basics of law, the judicial process, our state and federal court
systems, and current law-related issues. Check out Hampden Academy's website at www.ha.sad22.us/.
