ABA Division for Public Education: NOYS 2001: Participants: Edco Youth Alternative

Spring 2001: Does Capital Punishment Have a Future?

Participants
Edco Youth Alternative - Boston, MA
Class: Civics

Edco Youth Alternative, located near Fenway Park in Kenmore Square, Boston, Massachusetts, is small both in population and in real space. We occupy the third floor of a small office building. We are Sandy B.'s 4th period Civic class. Classes consist of 10-15 students with a staff of 4 teachers and 2 administrators.

Small classes provide a better way of giving us who are not on the verge of graduating a better chance, a second chance, to succeed. Each student is required to take core classes in English, History, Math, and Science, as well as work at a job of his/her choice a minimum of 20 hours weekly.

The student body is diversified. About 65% of the students are African-American, 20% are Hispanic, 14.5% are white, and 1/5% are Asian.

Edco provides students with a last chance to graduate high school and to move on. Many graduates of this program go on to become alumni at colleges around the country.
