Spring 2001: Does Capital Punishment Have a Future?

Participants
Brookwood High School - Snellville, GA
Class 1 of 2: Mrs. Blankenship's 6th Period Gifted World History Class

Hi, We're Mrs. Blankship's "precious little cherubs". Every 6th period we gather in her trailer and discuss the finer points of world history. Our school is Brookwood High School, home to over 3,000 proud Brookwood Broncos (students, not animals). Despite the fact that our school was founded upon an opossum farm, we pride ourselves in being ranked among the top 20 high schools in the nation. Both athletically and academically we excel over neighboring schools. When people move to Gwinnett County they try to move into the Brookwood district so as to provide their children with the best possible education. Approximately 93% of our school's population is white, about 5% Asian and Indian, and around 3% Black and Hispanic (note: this isn't an official census). Our community is mostly upper-middle class. Although we are a southern school, we don't fit into the stereotype people envision when they think about "southern schooling". Our school has a "Tradition of Excellence" and our class plans to continue that tradition in the Summit. We hope our views will prove to be thought-provoking.

Class 2 of 2: Mrs. Blankenship's 4th Period World History Class

We're Mrs. Blankenship's 4th period Gifted World History Class at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia. Snellville is a suburb of Atlanta. Our school prides itself on trying to be the best at anything we do. Our girl's swimming team is #1 in the state, and so is our boy's basketball team. We have about 3,000 students, 90+ % white and less than 10% other minorities. We are part of the Gwinnett County School system which is ranked among the top 20% in the nation. Our mainly white collar community is very involved in our school. As a result of all the community input, we have a Jumbotron Matrix Board as a part of the scoreboard in our football stadium. Jason Elam, the #1 place kicker in the NFL graduated from our high school. Visit us at our website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us/BrookwoodHS/.
