OVERVIEW

The Law-Related Education (LRE) Leadership Conference 2000 will bring together school and community-based audiences around the theme of how to better engage America’s youth in our society. We seek to assemble many diverse groups, including:
    • the law-related education community of program leaders at the national, state, and local levels
    • bar associations
    • teacher trainers
    • social studies, history, government, and law teachers
    • juvenile justice professionals; and
    • community groups working with youth in after school settings

Featured speakers and panels will focus on broad themes of civic participation in a new millennium, problems and opportunities in civic education, the changing perspectives and backgrounds of America’s young people, and strategies for better engaging America’s youth, including service learning as well as forums and summits that enable young people to discuss and debate public policies. A special session will highlight the contributions of law to broader social equality in the 20th century.

Workshops, organized into tracks, will focus on how to understand and better communicate legal and law-related topics within educational settings. Tracks include:

    • Curriculum & Teacher Development
    • Community Education,
    • Civic Participation & Leadership
    • Juvenile Justice
