Grade Levels: Middle and High School Teachers
Subjects: We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, the SC Supreme Court, and the Separation of Powers
The South Carolina Bar Law-Related Education Division, the South Carolina Supreme Court, the Center for Civic Education, the American Bar Association, and Nelson Mullins are offering a statewide, interactive learning institutethe South Carolina Supreme Court Institutefor eighteen (18) middle and high school teachers to encourage a better understanding and appreciation for the Supreme Court, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Separation of Powers. To accomplish this goal, LRE grouped two core programs together; We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution the first two-and-a-half days, and the recently developed SC Supreme Court program for three days. These two programs weave together an understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy and the branches of government. Upon completion of the institute, attendees will be able to transfer the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to a better understanding of the Supreme Court and how it relates to their daily lives. The institute will focus on including outside resource persons to include SC Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal, along with fellow justices and various judges representing Federal Court, Family Court, Circuit Court, and Court of Appeals. Two repeat mentors will be present for the Institute, who are experienced in both topic areas.
