Program Highlights

  • Deliberating in a Democracy (DID) -- International professional development and cooperative exchange program between high school teachers and students in the United States and former Soviet emerging democracies to improve the quality of civic education by deliberating current issues that represent tensions between liberty, equality, and safety with each other and with policymakers
  • Educating for Democracy -- Professional development initiative created by the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago that focuses on civic education and is designed to improve the quality, content, and process of teaching and learning for the critical elementary years
  • Equal Justice Under Law -- Illinois high school students study and conduct a moot court deliberation on a U.S. Supreme Court case, then apply their deliberations to a related policy question currently facing Illinois
  • Illinois Civic Mission Coalition -- Nonpartisan coalition of schools, foundations, government, non-profit organizations and the private sector are working together to help high schools prepare students to become engaged citizens
  • Illinois State Law-Related Education Conference -- Annual programs of workshops for teachers address current legal and political issues, interactive teaching methods, and innovative materials for the classroom
  • Illinois Youth Summit -- Illinois high school students address public policy issues with their peers and with local, state, and national leaders
  • In-Services, Workshops and Seminars-Day-long workshops and multiple day seminars for teachers on legal issues, law-related teaching methods, and classroom strategies for conducting discussions on controversial topics
  • Lawyer in the Classroom -- Attorney volunteers partner with teachers to help Chicago students understand their rights and responsibilities under the law using CRFC curricula
  • A More Perfect Union -- Interactive seventh- and eighth-grade curriculum about the U.S. Constitution to meet Illinois Public Law 195
  • Professional Development -- Day-long In-services and workshops, and multi-day seminars and institutes for both elementary and secondary level teachers on legal issues, law-related teaching methods, and classroom strategies for conducting discussions on controversial topics
  • Service Learning-training -- Workshops, resources, and materials for integrating community service into the classroom
  • Teaching American History -- Partnerships with local school districts to infuse LRE into U.S. History classes
  • VOICE -- Fourth- and fifth-grade students learn the basics of the American legal system, practice ways to resolve conflict peacefully, and engage in community service
  • We the People... Project Citizen -- Middle school program actively engages students in learning how to monitor and influence public policy and encourages civic participation among students, their parents, and members of the community
  • Youth For Justice -- A national network of law-related education organizations, providing training, materials, and technical assistance to every state
