Program Highlights

  • "Play by the Rules: Alabama Laws for Youth" is a juvenile law text and curriculum for 7th-grade citizenship classes. It is annually updated and distributed statewide.
  • "We the People...The Citizen and the Constitution" is a constitutional law program and competitive hearing for elementary, middle and high school sponsored nationally by the Center for Civic Education.
  • Project Citizen teaches students to grapple with local public policy and real community problems.
  • Street Law trains Cumberland law students in practical law and engages them in teaching youth in Birmingham area schools.
  • Teen Court is a peer sentencing court for first time non-violent juvenile offenders at Jefferson County Family Court. Over 150 teen volunteers throughout the county conduct sentencing hearings and decide constructive sentences for over 100 teens each year.
  • Teen Jury provides an opportunity for area volunteer teens to serve as jurors for mock trials conducted by Cumberland's trial advocacy classes.
  • Educating for Citizenship Annual Conference provides an annual meeting for civic educators and law related professionals with keynote speakers and 9 breakout sessions highlighting exemplary programs and expert presentations on timely topics.
  • Civitas International Civic Education Program partners Alabama, Ohio, and Kentucky with Ukraine, Poland, and South Africa and is administered by the Center for Civic Education.
  • Congressional Conference for Civic Education annually networks Alabama with other states in sharing knowledge and commitments to civic education and defining and promoting the civic mission of our schools.
  • We Dare Defend Our Rights is a 90-minute video and accompanying teacher guide featuring four Bill of Rights issues which have been strongly influenced by contemporary Alabamians.
  • We Can Work It Out! offers conflict management and mediation training and a showcase for students and is sponsored by Street Law, Inc.
  • Youth for Justice offers training and law-related activities coordinated by the Center for Civic Education, Constitutional Rights Foundations, Street Law, Inc., Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the American Bar Association.
  • Training is provided to teachers, law enforcement officers, Department of Youth Services and court related professionals to assist them in teaching civic education to youth state wide.
