Online Conversation:
Tinker v. Des Moines School Plaintiffs

Schools that Submitted Questions

The American Bar Association Division for Public Education would like to thank the following teachers and their students for submitting thoughtful questions for the Tinker v. Des Moines plaintiffs. The teachers responded to the ABA's request for teachers to involve their students in an "Online Conversation" with Christopher Eckhardt and Mary Beth and John Tinker, the plaintiffs in the landmark Supreme Court students' rights case of the late 1960s (see case summary).

The participating students provided a broad sample of the kinds of questions today's students have about the Tinker plaintiffs. The questions delve into the personal thoughts and experiences of three teenagers from an earlier generation (Christopher Eckhardt and Mary Beth and John Tinker) who stood up for the First Amendment rights of all students. Christopher, Mary Beth, and John all expressed their appreciation for having such interesting questions to answer.

The teachers and their schools are listed alphabetically by state.*

*The strong representation of Missouri schools is largely due to the cooperation of the Missouri Bar Association, which mailed information about the "Online Conversation" to 3,500 law-related education (LRE) programs around the state. We thank LRE Coordinator Millie Aulbur and her staff for their assistance.
