ABA Talking Points: Medicare

Speech Ideas/Talking Points

Medicare

What to Emphasize

Your Elder Law Day program can cut through the clutter of information about current Medicare options and clarify Medicare rights. Emphasize these themes:

  • Most beneficiaries are in original Medicare.
  • Original Medicare and Medicare managed care options must provide basic Medicare covered services.
  • If you are satisfied with your Medicare coverage, you don't have to change.
  • If you decide to change, there are some restrictions.
  • Be cautious about dropping a Medigap policy; you may not be able to get it back.
  • Before choosing a managed care plan, request a current list of plan providers, and a list of approved prescription medications.
  • Consider what services the plan will cover, and what the plan will cost.
  • If you have questions, contact your state health insurance and assistance program (SHIP), through your area agency on aging.
  • Check the Health Care Financing Administration website for frequently asked questions and comparative information on Medicare plans.
  • Know your appeal rights.
