Grades 4-6 Equal Protection Not Including Everyone! Handout Discussion Questions Read each of these situations. Think about it carefully. Then answer the questions that follow the situation. Some boys in your neighborhood decide to start their own club, but they won’t let girls join the club. Is this right? How would you feel if you wanted to join but could not? How would you feel if it was your club and someone forced you to include someone you didn’t want to? Should the government force the boys to include the girls? Give your reasons. A store owner who was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War won’t allow people of Vietnamese ancestry to shop in his store. Is this right? How would you feel if you were of Vietnamese ancestry and could not shop in the store? How would you feel if you were the store owner and the government forced you to allow people of Vietnamese ancestry to shop in your store? Should the store owner be forced to allow people of Vietnamese ancestry to shop in the store? Give your reasons. The public schools in your area won’t let certain children go to school for free because the children are not legally in the country. These children are born to people who came into the United States without getting permission from the U.S. government. Is it right to keep these children out of school? How would you feel if you lived in the United States but couldn’t go to school because your parents had come into the country without permission? Should the government force the schools to educate these children? Give your reasons.
