Beaver Meadow School (NH)
Law Day activities for second graders were held in conjunction with the school's Buddy
Program, which is a year-long law-related education program for early elementary grades.
The Law Day component included student essays on freedom, an original Law Day fable, and
original dances to the theme of liberty, freedom and respect for others.

Law Offices of Philip Deberard (FL)
Law Day activities included a mock trial in an actual courtroom, essay contest about the
law, educational classroom presentations on legal freedoms, and nine informative newspaper
inserts on the law, distributed to more than 5,000 students.

Mecklenburg County Bar Association (NC) and The Charlotte
Observer
South African journalist and anti-apartheid activist Donald Woods, on whom the film Cry
Freedom was based, was the featured speaker during a week-long series of lectures on
freedom, law and justice. Members of his audience included community leaders, students,
lawyers, and reporters. Mr. Woods was also the featured guest on a public radio news
program where he talked about his experiences of house arrest and censorship in South
Africa in the 1970s and the current state of freedom and equality in South Africa and in
America.

Office of the Staff Judge Advocate Fort Meade (MD)
Law Day activities included mock trials at three elementary schools, an essay competition
at two middle schools, a moot court presentation at a high school, and a trip to the U.S.
Supreme Court for selected high school students. A Law Day luncheon was held for community
leaders. Newspaper coverage and an electronic bulletin board helped publicize the Law Day
events.

Sumner County Bar Association (KS)
The 30 members of the Sumner County Bar organized a busy week of activities on law and
justice for local students. They gave presentations at local high schools on the American
justice system and the country's quest for equality. Topics ranged from Title IX to
racially motivated peremptory strikes at trial. The bar members also helped students
organize a mock trial, and the bar sponsored a poster contest and mock trial competition
for grade school and junior high school students.

Tulsa County Bar Association (OK)
Law Day activities included Ask-a-Lawyer and Lawyer in the Library programs, and a Law
Fair at a mall. Thousands of dollars were raised through community events, benefiting the
American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the Tulsa Juvenile Detention Center,
Tulsa Book and Food Banks, and American Cancer Research. Programs for students included a
juvenile justice program, a mock naturalization ceremony, trial presentation, lawyer in
the classroom program and Career Day. Justice Stephen G. Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court
was the featured speaker at the Law Day luncheon, reaching millions through television
coverage.
