Outstanding Law Day Activity Awards
Winners: Law Day 2001

Alabama Center for Law & Civic Education
Play by the Rules is a program to teach Alabama law to young people and to develop
civic understanding and a sense of civic responsibility. Its centerpiece is a 72-page
manual of Alabama law in question-and-answer form distributed annually to every seventh
grader in Alabama on or around Law Day, May 1for free. Play by the Rules
provides Alabama youth with their personal manual of practical law as it affects them.
Cosponsors include the Alabama State Department of Education, the Alabama Department of
Youth Services, and the Alabama Attorney Generals Office.

Baton Rouge (LA) Bar Foundation
On May 1, 2001, over 1400 students participated in the Law Day celebration. Students
witnessed the investiture of a judge and a mock naturalization ceremony, and heard a
keynote speech by a naturalized citizen. Essay and poster contest winners received their
awards. Other activities included mock trials and a mock voting exercise.

Maricopa County [Arizona] Bar Association
Law Week 2001 included poster, photo and essay contests for children; free legal advice to
members of the community through phone-a-lawyer, two community law fairs, five senior
citizen law fairs; lawyers in the classroom; and a tour of the Phoenix Municipal Court for
grade-school children.

Napa [California] Superior Court
The court invited all schools in the Napa Valley to participate in a student poster
contest. Entries were prominently displayed throughout courthouses. On Law Day, community
groups and government agencies hosted 25 outdoor booths. This event provided important
information about available programs for children from drug resistance education to car
seat safety.

Nevada County [California] Bar Association
The Nevada County Bar Association is a small rural bar association. Its program benefited
from cooperating organizations that included the Nevada County Courts, the Nevada County
schools, and the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. Events in the month-long program
included Kids in the Nevada County Courts, during which every 5th grader in
western Nevada County could visit the courthouse and attend five different programs. High
school students took part in an essay competition. The justices from the Third District
Court of Appeal held an actual appellate court session before 150 high school seniors.

Philadelphia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division
Philadelphias effort consisted of 18 programs. They ran every day of Law Week, and
included outreach to the community, such as a call-in program providing legal information,
a naturalization ceremony, law at the mall, and a Habitat for Humanity work day.
Activities for children included lawyers in the classroom, poster and essay contests,
information programs for graduating seniors, and career-oriented lawyer for a
day programs.
