JUDGE OR LAWYER IN EVERY SCHOOL

Launching a statewide goal of "A Judge or Lawyer in Every School", the Washington Bar developed a Law Week website (www.wsba.org/lawweek/home.htm). Its purpose was to extensively and cost-effectively recruit and inform local program organizers, volunteers, teachers and the public. The website provides ready references and quick links to easy-to-use lesson plans, school and volunteer contacts, teaching tips, and other practical information.

Ron Bemis, Chair of the state bar’s Law Week committee, reports that as a result, there was a four-fold increase of students served statewide to 12,000 during the week of May 8-12, 2000, involving many hundreds of lawyers, judges and classrooms.

Best Thing about the Program:
"It provides an annual, enriching, person-to-person opportunity for our youth to have positive classroom interactions with lawyers or judges on subjects of law, civics, and the important roles of everyone in our justice system."

Secret of Success:
"Combining the passion and commitment of the volunteers and organizers with the wonders of e-mail networking and the website."

Advice: How-to tips are on the website, and this year's Washington State Law Week will be held the week of May 1, 2001.
