MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Activity Summary:

Each year, the Lawyers in the Classroom Project of the White Plains Bar Association conducts a series of ongoing programming events in partnership with the White Plains Public Schools. The centerpiece of these efforts is the annual Moot Court Competition. More than 200 students take law courses at White Plains High School, and a significant number of them participated in this year’s competition on a purely voluntary basis. WPBA-LITC Project’s programming efforts culminate in the Moot Court Final Arguments, which are scheduled each year to coincide with Law Day.

Activity Narrative:

This year’s Moot Court Competition involved pre-textual automobile stops, racial profiling, and suppression issues in the area of criminal law. All who participated acquired a greater understanding of how these issues are addressed by police in everyday society. The 1999 Moot Court problem itself was researched and drafted by the WPBA-LITC Project Coordinator on the basis of criteria previously supplied by the school. Subsequent programming was custom tailored by participating teachers and lawyers to meet the needs of the students, culminating in the Law Day arguments. WPBA-LITC Project is an ongoing successful partnership between the bar and our area schools and has been favorably received by both school administrators and New York State’s Chief Judge.
