Activity Narrative:

The Patton Legal Center conducted their 1st Law Day activities this year. The activities included a luncheon, a poster contest, an essay contest, and two mock trials.

Prior to Law Day Week, we established an essay contest for all the students at Heidelberg High School with the theme, “Should Juveniles Who Commit a Serious Crime be Tried as Adults.” We had established prizes of certificates for the top three essays and a $50 US Savings Bond for the 1st Place Winner. We also established a poster contest for the 3rd through 5th grade classes of the Patrick Henry Village Elementary School with the theme of "How I See the Law Protecting the Best Interest of Children." We awarded the top three posters a gold, silver, and bronze Olympic style medal and provided a $50 US Savings Bond for the 1st Place Winner. We also went to the two local 4th grade classes and conducted classes in key legal issues that they would see in the upcoming mock trials. We also prepared an article for the local installation newspaper.

On 1 May 2001, The Patton Legal Center held a Law Day Luncheon. During the Luncheon, we announced the winners of the essay contest and poster contest. We also recognized personnel from the Patton Legal Center for their outstanding support to the local community.

On 2 May 2001, The Patton Legal Center conducted a mock trial for the Mark Twain Elementary School’s Fourth Grade Classes on our courtroom.  On 3 May 2001, we conducted a mock trial at the Patrick Henry Village Elementary School for their Fourth Grade Classes. The mock trial was “State of Italia v. Geppetto.”

Eleven students were selected from each school to participate as jurors. At the conclusion of each mock trial, we had attorneys and legal specialists talk with the students and answer any of their questions.
