Law Day U.S .A.

Activity Summary:

The Lake County Judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit provide a variety of programs designed to involve students from kindergarten through high school in Law Day activities. Invitations to take part in our activities are sent to all of the schools in the county.

For the very young children we sponsor a coloring contest in which we chose a patriotic form of artwork for the children to color. For grades 4 through 6 we offer a poster contest. Each student is encouraged to provide an original drawing consistent with our theme for Law Day. Grades 7 and 8 participate in an essay contest. This year’s theme was “Are You Safe in Your School?”

We offer a photo contest for high school and college students. We also sponsor an oratorical contest for high school students, again consistent with our theme.

It is difficult to estimate how many students participate in our contests because the teachers do the initial judging of the art contests. We had approximately 200 coloring entries and 25 posters. We received 429 essays from the junior high school students.

High schools are invited to come to the courthouse to participate in a variety of Law Day activities. We offer a tour of courts in session; a tour of the jail; a mock trial based upon an actual case; a mock reckless homicide sentencing based upon an actual case; a presentation by the Northern Illinois Police Crime Lab; and a presentation by the detective division of the Sheriff’s Department. 250 students participated in the 2001 program.

We hold an awards ceremony recognizing the winners in all of our contests. The winners of our oratorical contest present their speeches during the program. We also awarded two Liberty Bell Awards. This year’s winners were the Women and Children’s Center of NICASA and attorney Elliot Pinsel for his work in collecting and distributing Christmas presents to institutionalized adults.
