Peoples Law
School: The Young Lawyers Section planned and led a free Seminar at LSU-S. a
Medicaid Eligibility Supervisor and four volunteer attorneys were well prepared and gave
of their time for a community service for an appreciative crowd, which exceeded three
hundred. They gave talks and later answered questions related to wills, trusts and estate
planning.
"Helping Hands" Community Outreach: The community outreach project
provided 11% of the total city-wide chicken dinner fund drive revenue for the
Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission; two lawyers funded dinners which were delivered to the
Well (a downtown residential project for homeless persons); several young lawyers used
their lunch hour on Friday, April 24 to deliver lunches to other groups; some donated a
portion of their Saturday to boxing lunches; and a substantial accumulation of cleaning
supplies was collected from participating law firms and donated to support the regular
kitchen activities of the Mission which provides meals, counseling and addiction
rehabilitation for the homeless.
Mock Trials: The Shreveport Bar Auxiliary and two District Judges orchestrated
four separate Mock Trials for almost three hundred Caddo Middle School students. Lawyers
from the District Attorneys Office gave assistance for the trial situations, which the
students reenacted, at Caddo Parish Courthouse.
Legal Secretaries: The Legal Secretaries served coffee and sweet rolls to the
Caddo District Courts clerks. The organization also led tours of the Court House for
a Bossier Parish Middle School.
Call 3: Thirty-five young attorney volunteers answered questions by telephone
from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at KTBS-3 in honor of Law Week. Three to four telephones were
busy all day with callers wanting free advice on any topic.
Liberty Bell Award: G.S. "Mack" McCarter was named the winner of the
1998 Liberty Bell Award at the annual Law Day luncheons. The award recognizes community
service, which strengthens the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under the
law, promotes a greater appreciation of our government, and encourages respect for the
law. G.S. "Mack" McCarter founded Shreveport Community Renewal; a program
designed to restore the community through active Christian love.
Essay Winners: Senior High students were invited to write essays on
"Celebrating Your Freedom" and the winners were announced at a Law Day special
ceremony at the Louisiana Court of Appeal, Second Circuit. Judge Charles Peatross
addressed and recognized the winners.
Red Mass: The ceremony at Holy Trinity was planned to coincide with the Law Day
luncheon this year. The Red Mass celebrants asked for guidance in all aspects of the
judicial system and recognized school personnel, clergy, and government officials who have
the responsibility of teaching or administrating justice to the youth of our area.
Reception and tours of the Courthouse: The Legal Secretaries hosted a breakfast
for the District Court personnel and gave tours of the Court House for 25 High School
students.
TV Production: The Paralegal Association in cooperation with a Community College
and a local educational television station, produced a film for High School students on
rights and responsible behavior as adults.
