Clearfield County Law Day 2002

Activity Narrative:

The "legal eagles" program was held at the Curwensville Elementary School (the 5th Grade Class) in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, located approximately 45 miles northwest of Penn State University. As part of the program, the students received T-shirts and were introduced to various community leaders, law enforcement officers (local, state, and federal) and cultural leaders.

The program stressed the importance of the students' tolerance, respect, honesty and responsibility to their classmates, parents, school, teachers and communities. We had speakers from different religions, races and backgrounds explain their feelings about their culture, and how everybody is different, but we are all still Americans. We also encouraged the students to ask each of the law enforcement officers to explain how their jobs have been affected by September 11. We had guests from the local Red Cross Chapter who were at Ground Zero talk to the students about their experiences.

At the end of the program, on Law Day, we had a graduation ceremony for the students and their parents.

We had a great response to our Law Day activities from the community as well as from the press.
