Activity Summary:

The Atlanta Bar's Free Legal Information Hotline reached more than 3,000 Atlantans and provided them with legal advice they might otherwise not receive because of access or money.

Activity Narrative:

The Atlanta Bar Association's and United Way's First Call For Help Free Legal Information Hotline proved to be an overwhelming success with more than 3,000 calls from the public May 1. The total set a new record for the annual program surpassing last year's mark of more than 2,400 calls. Beginning at 9 a.m. and running through 5 p.m., phones rang nonstop with some questions answered right then and others referred to volunteer attorneys for a free 30-minute consultation.

The Free Legal Information Hotline received media coverage from point and broadcast media with articles in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, public service announcements on WGST 640 AM and 105.7 FM, AM 750 WSB Radio's Clark Howard Show, WALK 1380 AM, and WVEE V103 FM, as well as coverage before and during May 1 on FOX5 WAGA-TV. Atlanta Bar members also appeared on radio stations WVEE V103 and WALK 1380 AM May 1, to discuss Law Day and answer listeners' legal questions.

In addition to the Free Legal Information Hotline, the Atlanta Bar also sent representatives from the judicial, legal and law enforcement professions to four Atlanta area high schools to discuss the juvenile justice process.

U.S. Congressman John Lewis was the featured speaker at the May 9 Law Day Luncheon. He spoke on the theme of Law Day 1997, "Celebrate Your Freedom." The 1997 Liberty Bell award was also presented posthumously to Patsy Morris. The award was accepted by her husband, the Rev. John Morris. The Liberty Bell Award recognizes an individual whose community service has strengthened the American system of freedom under the law.
