LAW WEEK SPECIAL PUBLICATION
Activity Summary:
The Alabama State Bar, in conjunction with The Montgomery Advertiser, produced
the second annual Law Day newspaper supplement as a kick-off to Law Week activities. This
insert was designed to highlight public service projects of the state bar, as well as
expand the public's knowledge of lawyers and the legal profession. The state bar provided
100 percent of the editorial content of the insert, with the Advertiser receiving all
advertising revenues it generated. A tri-county area surrounding the state bar was
targeted for coverage, and timing was planned to coordinate with the official start of Law
Week.
Activity Narrative:
An eight-page newspaper supplement was inserted into every copy of the Sunday Montgomery
Advertiser delivered to homes in a tri-county area (with an estimated population of
300,000), as well as put in all newspapers sold in machines or over the counter in stores.
Copies of the insert were provided to all elementary school fifth-grader classes
participating in the Alabama State Bar's Partnership Program and to all local bar
presidents.
The cover artwork featured the "Celebrate Your Freedom" theme designed and
provided by the American Bar Association.
Included inside the supplement were numerous articles regarding area Law Week
activities, photographs from the Law Day Poster Contest, a letter from the state bar
president and information about the various state bar programs and publications for and
about the public.
Due to last year's success, the supplement was repeated to extend the impact it made.
The insert's information can be used again and again through the year, and was tied in as
the kick-off for other Law Day activities, such as interviews with local attorneys on area
television and radio programs; articles in statewide newspapers; the Legal Milestones
Project; call-in legal lines; articles in trials; Liberty Bell awards; and the
presentation of the state bar's video, To Serve the Public, to schools, bar associations
and civic groups. Specially designated areas in the supplement allowed area firms and
companies to be sponsors.
