Activity Summary:
The varied week-long activities reached more than 1,000 students at seven Middle
Schools and more than 500 Mock Trial Scripts were distributed. Almost 600 High School
students participated in the Essay Contest. Nearly 100 volunteers conducted The People's
Law School on the topics: Child Support Enforcement, Related Legal Careers, Wills and
Successions, and Consumer Credit. Monetary support was given for the Mock Trial
Competition winners as well as the Essay Winners who wrote on "Celebrating Your
Freedom." Approximately 200 calls were received during actual Law Day, "Call
3."
Activity Narrative:
Law Week activities were many and varied.
LIBERTY BELL AWARD: John T. Porter was named the winner of the 1997 Liberty Bell
Award at the annual Law Day luncheon. The award has recognized outstanding leaders and
workers in the community since 1965. John T. Porter has served as President of Volunteers
of America, Community Council, and Goodwill Industries.
Target Audience: 25 past Award Winners assist in nominating and selecting the
individual who has made a difference according to the guidelines of the National Law Day.
How Goals Met: Community leaders are involved with the Attorneys in choosing a
Mover & Shaker in the Community. Past winners are included in the Law Day activities
as well.
MOCK TRIALS: Claire Bullock, President of the Shreveport Bar Auxiliary, chose
the script about drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. She orchestrated Mock
Trials for almost five hundred Caddo Middle-High School students. Law Clubs and Civics
classes received scripts one month prior to the actual Mock Trial and they prepared.
Judges John Mosely and Michael Walker, along with attorneys Kitty Estopinal, David
Cromwell, Ross Owen, and Penny Nowell led credence to the actual trial situations that the
students reenacted at Caddo Parish Courthouse. Broadmoor Middle Lab School had a separate
Mock Trial at their school later in May.
Target Audience: The entire Caddo Parish Middle School System, teachers and
students.
How Goals Met: Students were able to experience actual courtroom situations
complete with an actual Judge and supporting attorneys, bailiffs, etc., in a positive
manner.
ESSAY WINNERS: All parish Senior High students were invited to write essays on
"Celebrating Your Freedom." The three top winners were announced at the Law Day
Luncheon by Bill Kendig, Chairman of Law Week. Those receiving medals and U.S. Savings
Bonds, courtesy of Rice & Kendig, were: Jay Jamison, First; Kelly Roberts, Second; and
Heather Ford, Third.
Target Audience: Caddo Parish High School, teachers and students.
How Goals Met: Students were able to think about the freedoms they enjoy and create
a paper expressing their feelings, realizing attorneys are involved in maintaining many of
their freedoms.
CALL 3: Forty attorney volunteers stayed busy from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
answering legal questions by telephone at KTBS-3 in honor of Law Week. They were willing
and much appreciated by the constant stream of calls.
Target Audience: The general public, i.e., anyone having a television within the
viewing area.
How Goals Met: Public needs met, and attorneys volunteering legal advice and
concern.
PEOPLES' LAW SCHOOL: Thirty volunteer attorneys, Paralegals and Legal
Secretaries were well prepared and gave of their time for a public service.
Target Audience: The general public.
How Goals Met: TV appearances, Billboards, and Radio interviews advised the public
of the free legal education opportunities.
STOCK THE SHELVES: The Shreveport Bar Association's Community Action Team
purchased nonperishable food items for thirty-five area families. Committee Chair, Cynthia
Shemwell, Fran Strange and Marguerite Allen purchased more than 175 pounds of rice and
beans, 500 canned goods and multiple boxed items. The food was delivered to help area
flood victims and those in distress.
Target Audience: Attorneys and needy, flood distressed families.
How Goals Met: Legal community made aware of needs and given the opportunity to
help, and 35 families received needed, nonperishable food for weeks.
HIGH SCHOOL FORUMS: Carl Franklin, President of the Black Lawyer's Association,
and Judge John Mosely cooperated in presenting a "Question and Answer" session.
Target Audience: High School students.
How Goals Met: Questions and answers from the students provided information and
gave the minority students a non-threatening environment.
