Activity Narrative:
The Litchfield County Bar Association provided numerous programs throughout the month
of May 1997 in celebration of Law Day. The activities began on Monday, May 5, at the
Litchfield Superior Court with our Law Day Ceremony.
During that ceremony, third grade school children from Litchfield Center School
provided singing and the Pledge of Allegiance. There was also a poster contest in which
students from Goshen Center School and Rumsey Hall in Washington, Connecticut illustrated
one of their freedoms. The Litchfield County Bar presented the Liberty Bell award to Eda
Sullivan, Clerk of the Probate Court, honoring her dedicated service.
From Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, 1997, attorneys from the Litchfield County
Bar participated in a nightly television program on our Cable 5 local access channel.
Topics included Real Estate, Wills, Bankruptcy, Criminal Law, Personal Injury, Family Law
and Elderly Law. The attorneys provided background information and viewers were invited to
call in with questions.
On Tuesday, May 20, a Free Legal Clinic was held in Winsted, Connecticut and on
Wednesday, May 21, Free Legal Clinics were held in Torrington, Connecticut and New
Milford, Connecticut. During these clinics two (2) to four (4) attorneys were available to
meet one on one with anyone having a legal question. Advice was given on referrals made.
Also during the month of May, attorneys visited the Torrington Middle School,
participating in a program entitled, "This is Your Law." The attorneys spoke
with the students and fielded questions. Several attorneys also visited other schools in
the county to meet with students.
Our Law Day activities reached individuals of all age groups from school children at
numerous grade levels to adults and senior citizens, who attended the legal clinics or
viewed the television programs. We worked in conjunction with schools, libraries and the
media in order to present our programs to the public.
