Local Government Recognition of Law Day -- Albany Mayor Tommy Coleman proclamation May 1,1997 as Law Day.

Law Day Bar Association Luncheon Meeting -- The Daugherty Circuit Bar Association decided to dedicate our annual Law Day Bar Meeting to honoring the many years of public service of the Honorable Asa D. Kelley, Jr., our recently retired chief superior court judge. In addition to his years in the private practice of law in Albany, Judge Kelly was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, Mayor of the city of Albany, Director of the State Department of corrections, and Judge of the Superior Court of the Daugherty Circuit. Judge Kelley's long career of service in a variety of capacities emphasized and exemplified the 1997 Law Day Theme, Celebrate your Freedom. A portrait of Judge Kelley, to be hung in Daugherty County Courthouse, was unveiled at the meeting by Bar President Donald, III. The meeting was covered by both local television stations and the Albany Herald our daily newspaper.

School Speakers Program -- Daugherty Circuit Bar Association attorneys gave Law Day talks to some 300 students at Magnolia Elementary School. In cooperation with Albany State University's Political Science Department, a Law Day 1997 forum presented three local attorneys and a Superior Court Judge discussing Law Day and the Law Day theme, Celebrate Your Freedom, on May 1, 1997.

Bar President Donald A. Sweat presented pocket constitutions and Law Day commemorative pencils, obtained from the ABA, to second and fifth grade students at the Lake Park Elementary School.

Publicity -- Our members made an extensive effort to make the public aware of the Law Day 1997 theme, "Celebrate your Freedom."

Television -- Daugherty Circuit Bar Law Chairperson and President-Elect James E. Reynolds, Jr. appeared to talk about Law Day and the Bar Association's activities to celebrate the event on WFXL-TV, Channel 31's morning talk show, "Around Town". This FOX Network affiliated station broadcasts in and around Albany and is carried on by local cable networks throughout southwest Georgia, reaching an audience of approximately 20,000.

Newspapers-- The Albany Herald, Albany's local daily newspaper, circulation 38,000, ran a special Law Day Editorial by Daugherty Circuit Bar member Walter H. Burt, III on April 28, 1997, as well as articles about the Daugherty Circuit Bar Association's Law Day programs, emphasizing service to the public provided by lawyers, and the Law Day theme.

The Albany Journal, a local weekly newspaper, circulation approximately 6,000, published an article about Law Day, the Law Day 1997 theme, and the Daugherty Circuit Bar Association's Law Day activities which was submitted by Daugherty Circuit Bar Association Law Day Publicity Chairperson, Robert D. Goldsmith.

Radio -- We sent public service announcements noting the Law Day theme and the Daugherty Circuit Bar's activities in recognition of Law Day to five local radio stations broadcasting in the Daugherty County and Southwest Georgia area.

Daugherty Circuit Bar Association Law Day Chairperson and President-elect, James E. Reynolds, Jr., also appeared on the WALG-AM radio call in talk show,"Ask a Lawyer", hosted weekly by local attorney Terry Marlowe, to spread the Law Day message. This show reaches an average audience of 5,000.

Marquee Signs -- The Daugherty Circuit Bar Association also arranged for display of the Law day 1997 theme on the marquee signs of a local business during May. These marquees are located on the major east-west four lane highway coming into Albany from the west and the main north-south four-lane highway through the city.

Liberty Bell Award -- Bobby Joiner was chosen to receive the Daugherty Circuit Bar Association's 1997 Liberty Bell Award for his prison ministry to inmates in the Daugherty County Jail. This award was presented at a special ceremony in open court during the May 1997 term of the Daugherty Superior Court. This ceremony was covered by the local television and print media.
