Activity Narrative:
The Third Annual Law Day for the family, co-sponsored by The Cuyahoga County Bar
Association and Case Western Reserve University School of Law, was a free family-oriented
event. The Third Annual Law Day for the family featured eighteen different workshops on
various topics in the law. Each workshop was designed to provide members of the public
with valuable information about legal issues that affect everyday life. Members of the
public can best celebrate their freedom when they understand the rule of law as it affects
everyday life.
All residents of Cuyahoga County were invited to attend this free, family-oriented
event. This event was publicized in a variety of ways. Flyers were posted in all public
libraries, all county courthouses, various churches and synagogues and at various
locations throughout Case Western Reserve University. Flyers were also hand-delivered to
each councilperson for the City of Cleveland for distribution to that councilperson's
Ward.
Each seventh and eighth grade student in the greater Cleveland area received area
received notice of the Third Annual Law Day for the family through an advertisement in
"LEGAL NEWS for Young Americans," a newspaper published by The Cuyahoga County
Bar Association.
Members of the Law Day Committee and officers of The Cuyahoga Bar Association also
appeared on various radio and television programs to explain the event and to encourage
participation.
Advertisements for the event also appeared in "Law and Fact," the journal
published by The Cuyahoga County Bar Association.
In addition, the seventeen exhibitors were sent copies of the Flyer and asked to
circulate same through the exhibitor's organization.
Once the attendees arrived at the event, they had the opportunity to attend the
workshops, to view the exhibits and to speak to persons affiliated with the seventeen
exhibitors. The exhibits included organizations such as: The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center,
which provides counseling and advocacy for rape victims: The Cleveland Tenants
Organization, which provides advice and information to tenants: and The Legal Aid Society,
which provides legal representation to persons who qualify for such representation. These
exhibitors provided the attendees the ability to gather information at the event and to
follow up with these organizations after the Third Annual Law Day for the Family.
The attendees could also have their children fingerprinted, courtesy of the University
Circle Police Department. The University Circle Police Department also provided public
safety awareness to both children attendees and adult attendees through McGruff the Dog,
materials distributed and individual discussion between police officers and the attendees.
What better way to celebrate one's freedom then to learn about one's rights under the
rule of law, receive information about organizations and services available to assist the
public, and to interact with lawyers, judges, and law professors?
