LOS ANGELES BENCH AND BAR AFFILIATES
Highlights of 1997 Law-Related Education Activities
1. A day at Whittier School of Law
Law student Jimmy Valentine a Bench and Bar volunteer at Muir Junior High planned a day
for Muir Junior High students at his law school.
Bench and Bar provided a bus and lunch for thirty-five students to spend a half day at
the law school. The students did an outstanding job with their Mock trial with Jimmy
acting as the judge and guide for the students. (Protection of all individual rights.)
This is the second year we have been the sponsor of this trip. After the trial the
students enjoyed Subway sandwiches and cold drinks in the beautiful courtyard. Jimmy is a
senior graduating this year; however, he found the time to spend with the students.
Many of our scholarship students have been involved in a community project during the
year related to the law. A recommendation as a part of receiving our scholarships. A
wonderful experience for the students.
The Oasis Senior Center
(located in Robinson-May Department store)
Planning with Oasis director, Cynthia Berry, we developed three law related workshops
for the year. October-May 1997

and William Helliard.
2) Wills and Trusts: What is your responsibility? Carl Elarles, Esq., and Roosevelt

Issues. Dr. Tumani Leatherwood, a Physician at Kariser Hospital with specialty in
geriatrics. Felix Leatherwood, an attorney for the State of California also participated.
Judge Lillie, Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal, provided the opportunity for
attorney Leatherwood to alter his scheduled case in the Court of Appeal so that he could
keep his promised to participated in this activity at the Oasis on time. The group took
away ideas, forms, booklets that will help them make informed decisions.
75th Street Elementary School
Bench and Bar Affiliates has been involved with 75th Street since the early seventies.
Since that time the school has become involved in several law-related programs: Student
Court, a Peace Maker Program and Annual Bench and Bar activities. For three years we have
brought in students from the Dorsey Law Magnet as a part of the Law Day activities. In
addition five lawyers, including three judges, returned this year. We also had three Law
Magnet students who prepared activities centered around the amendments to the
Constitution.
The 75th Street Schools Leadership team visited the Compton Courthouse on the
invitation of Judge Marcelita Hayne. They were given a guided tour of the building and met
many of the court personnel.

Mid-City Alternative School
Twenty students and their teacher Bill Quinn visited the Inglewood Courthouse. The
students had an opportunity to ask questions of court personnel including the judges. The
students were well prepared and asked many questions of the judges. Mr. Quinn did
follow-up lessons using the packets sent to him by our committee. The teacher stated he
would like to have follow-up by an attorney later. We will provide that on request.
