Activity Summary:

The Oklahoma City Association of Black Lawyers in conjunction with the Oklahoma County Bar Association hosted a Law Day Community Legal Fair on Saturday, May 17, 1997, at the Ralph Ellison Public Library, 2000 N.E. 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This setting provided a central location with ample space and parking for Northeast Oklahoma City community members to visit with licensed attorneys about legal issues. Both organizations furnished ten attorneys with expertise and experience in various legal topics of interest to low-income and middle-income community members. This event is the first in a series of joint community service projects these organizations hope to provide. Another important aspect of the Legal Fair is that lawyers were available to talk to students about law-related careers.

Activity Narrative:

The Oklahoma City Association of Black Lawyers partnered with the Oklahoma County Bar Association to host a Law Day-sponsored Community Legal Fair on Saturday, May 17, 1997. The objective of this event was to provide the opportunity for community members to confer about low-income and middle-income legal issues with licensed attorneys and to advise young people about law-related careers and preparing for law school. John Green, President of the Oklahoma City Association of Black Lawyers, and Steve Barghols, President of the Oklahoma County Bar Association, both believe that this legal fair was an excellent opportunity for members of the legal community to provide valuable legal information to the community, as well as work together, become better acquainted, and develop appreciation and respect for the diversity of interests and talents of their fellow lawyers.

The Ralph Ellison Library was chosen as the legal fair site because of its accessibility, ample space and excellent parking facilities. The Law Fair was advertised on the library marquee that faces one of the most traveled streets in Oklahoma City. Each organization furnished ten attorneys who were knowledgeable in criminal law, family law, housing, consumer/bankruptcy, workers compensation and employment law. This Law Day project was planned and produced by a joint committee of the Oklahoma City Association of Black Lawyers and Oklahoma County Bar Association.
