Dear Ms. Jones:

I am writing to invite your students to participate in an exciting new program that the Maricopa County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division is conducting as part of Law Week, an annual celebration of our nation's laws and our citizen's freedom.

Law Week is held annually April 26 through May 3, and includes several events such as student essay contests, law forums, free legal advice clinics at local malls, student tours of the State Supreme Court, legal outreach programs for the elderly, and much more. The purpose of Law Week is to raise awareness and educate the community about current legal issues and about resources available for legal counseling. One important goal of Law Week is to involve young citizens in projects that will promote understanding and enthusiasm for the legal system and the freedoms it protects.

One of this year's new projects is the "Celebrate Your Freedom" Photo Contest. We invite all students grades 7-12 to submit a photo which depicts their idea of an image of freedom. These photos will then be judged by local attorneys and the winner will be published in the May edition of the Maricopa County Bar Association's legal newspaper, the Maricopa Lawyer. Copies of the publication with the winning photograph will be provided to the classroom of the winner and to the winner's family. We also hope to have the photo published in the Arizona Republic teen section. If you would like a copy of the Maricopa Lawyer for review, please contact the Maricopa County Bar Association at the number below.

The winner will receive a new Nikon Sport Touch Outfit camera graciously donated by The Guild Camera Shop. This camera comes with a waterproof case, batteries and film, and is splash proof. "Fun for the kids to take to the lake," described Guild Camera Shop Manager, John Riley. The winner and runners up will also receive a certificate from the MCBA Young Lawyers Division.

The deadline for entry is April 11, 1997. Please submit all photos in care of Mona Fontes at the Maricopa County Bar Association at the address given below. No late entries will be considered. All photography must be student work.

You may implement this contest in any manner which you believe will most inspire students to participate. Please do not hesitate to call me or Mona Fontes at the Maricopa County Bar Association with any questions or concerns. Again, all entries must be received by April 11, 1997 at the Maricopa County Bar Association. The mailing address and phone number is:

Very truly yours,

Kathryn Ramey
