Essex Vicinage Law Day 2002

Activity Summary:

Law Day 2002 was planned to stimulate thinking about the Law Day theme "Assuring Justice for All" and bring judges and lawyers into contact with the community in a teaching/learning mode. The program was a collaborative effort between the Superior Court, Essex Vicinage, the Essex County Bar Association, the NJ State Bar Foundation's IOLTA Fund, the Newark Municipal Court and local schools. Law Day 2002 involved 6000+ students; 50 Superior Court judges, 7 Municipal Court judges, 114 attorneys, 50 Sheriff's Officers and numerous court staff.

Activity Narrative:

Mock Trial Program
A Mock Trial Program was held in 57 schools across the county. One judge, two attorneys and a sheriff's officer visited each school. Students participated in role-play as defendants, witnesses, plaintiffs and jurors. All court sessions were canceled on the morning of May 1st to facilitate participation. A luncheon was held to debrief and honor the bar volunteers.

Writing contest
One hundred and twenty-eight middle and high school students submitted entries in the writing contest. Forty-eight submissions were entered from elementary schools in the art contest and were displayed in the courthouse. Additionally, on Friday, May 3rd, a workshop was held in the courthouse where the student artists fashioned banners from the various motifs in the award-winning art entries. The banners will be shown in the court house children's art gallery.

An awards event was held on May 9th at the Essex County College. Three hundred people attended to honor the contest winners and participate in a Town Meeting type discussion.

Four hundred program journals containing the award-winning writing and art entries were published.

Video Documentary
Finally, a video documentary of Law Day 2002 is being produced by court staff for viewing in the courthouse, schools and on cable TV.
