Interview with Marsha Kitagawa
Best Things about the Courts Internet Law Day Program:
What could have been a staid, unlively Internet chatroom discussion between Family
Court Judge Karen Radius and students at Kaimuki High School developed into a
free-flowing, uninhibited exchange of information, says coordinator Marsha Kitagawa.
Although students prepared questions for the judge in advance, which were
preapproved by their teacher, the questions were soon exhausted during the 45-minute
program. Very soon into the program, students asked questions that did not relate to the
curriculum assignment. The unscreened questions reflected a refreshing curiosity about the
judge as a person and issues that concern the students. Judge Radius took the opportunity
to reveal her personal side through a medium that can be impersonal.
Secret of Success: The judge was frank and friendly. The students were
curious and eager to interact with the judge.
Advice: Do not be afraid to deal with off-the-cuff questions from the
students.
Improving the Program:
Follow up the Internet chat by having the students visit the courtroom, meet with
the judge, and watch actual trials.
