Hartford County Bar Association (HCBA) 2001 Law Day Activities
Activity Summary:
Overall, approximately 350 people attended the Hartford County Bar Association Law Day
ceremony and related activities. Attendees for the superior court ceremony included
lawyers, judges, local high school students and their teacher and members of the public.
Afternoon mock trials included students from the Transitional Learning Academy (a school
for troubled youths), their instructor, lawyers, judges and a Hartford Police Officer, as
well as members of the public. The 5K Road race was open to our members and the public and
we had all ages participating.
Activity Narrative:
The Law Day Ceremony was held at Hartford Superior Court. Hartfords
Administrative Judge opened the ceremony. The bar associations president and
committee chairs welcomed the audience and introduced the 2001 Pro Bono Award recipients
and the keynote speaker and Liberty Bell Award recipient, Dr. Julio Morales. In his
speech, Dr. Morales discussed his experiences of the last four years of listening to the
voices of teenagers in the care of Connecticuts Department of Children and Families
and the people that provide services to them.
The Presiding Judge of the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters presented awards to the
essay contest winners. The students that participated were sophomores at Hartfords
Weaver High School and were given a homework assignment to write an essay on the topic
determined by the Law Day committee, Should juveniles accused of serious crimes be
tried as an adult? If so, for which crimes and at which ages? The students did not
know that this was a contest. The Law Day Committee presented 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place winners with monetary awards.
An outdoor reception was held at the conclusion of the ceremony for everyone who
attended. The HCBA participated in a student mock trial in the afternoon. This program
gave the bar an opportunity to work with students who have had a troubled past and who are
working toward reestablishing their foundation for learning.
On May 12th the HCBA sponsored a 5K Road race. This race drew 80
participants of all ages and levels. The race generated a profit of $2,000, which was
donated to the Hartford County Bar Foundation, a 501 c(3) organization whose purpose is to
assist Hartfords needy.
Overall, the committee felt that the activities that were organized for the Hartford
County Bar Association 2001 Law Day activities were consistent with the theme for this
years event. The theme Protecting the Best Interests of Our Children was
woven into the fabric of our events and played a significant role in determining the
selection of speakers and awards. The Hartford County Bar Association was pleased to play
a role in furthering the development of our youth.
