Law Day Festivities Honor Jurors
Project Description:
The Genesee (Michigan) County Bar Association used Law Day observances as a way of
honoring past jurors. For its first Annual Juror Appreciation Day, the bar association
invited jurors to an event at the 67th District Court and 68th District Court in Flint.
Legal brochures, refreshments, and T-shirts with the theme Jury Duty. . . It
Isnt Fair If Youre Not There were provided to jurors in an effort to
highlight the increasing concern of under-representation in the jury pool.
Other general public activities included a free Ask the Lawyers clinic at a
mall and a series of advice clinics held at twelve senior citizen centers.
Students from 16 high schools attended a roundtable panel discussion by judges and
lawyers on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Additional school programs
included an essay contest, mock trials, and a pilot program at eight schools with lawyer
presentations on gang activity, graffiti, shoplifting, traffic laws, and employment of
minors.
High school students and their faculty were the guests at the Annual Law Day Luncheon
that featured Author John Loftus, former prosecutor with the Justice Departments
Nazi War Crimes Unit.
Best Things about This Program:
Our Law Day luncheon with the keynote speaker, our outreach to seniors, and Juror
Appreciation Day, according to Ramona Sain, Executive Director of the Genesee County
Bar Association.
Secret of Success: Enthusiastic volunteers committed to Law Day
How-to Advice
Other than our Law Day Committee members, most of our members are only asked to
volunteer one or two hours for a specific activity. With this reasonable time commitment,
lawyers find it manageable and fun to volunteer, says Sain.
