Interview with Annette Pitts about Florida Law Week
Celebration
Collaborating with its state Supreme Court and bar association, the Florida Law Related
Education Association developed and distributed lesson plans for judges, encouraging them
to visit classrooms throughout the state during Law Week. The association also sponsored
statewide essay and poster contests, appellate brief writing competition for high schools
students, noncompetitive oral arguments for students, and Law Week programs for children
and their families at the Supreme Court.
Best Thing About this Program:
The interaction between the children and the justices as they got to sit in the
justices chairs and make decisions about fictitious cases, according to
Annette Boyd Pitts, Executive Director of FLREA. The children get to see the human
side of the courts and have a real hands-on experience.
Secret of Our Success:
A genuine interest in children, public education, and rebuilding public trust and
confidence in the legal system fuels the successful partnership between the Supreme Court
of Florida, the Florida Law Related Education Association, and the Florida Bar, says
Pitts. The generosity of the justices in giving time is another factor in the
success of this project. This makes the day extremely special for children and their
families.
How-to Advice: Finalize a date as early as possible for the Law Week event.
