YOUTH LAW FAIR 2000

Activity Summary:

In honor of Law Day, seven Sections of the D.C. Bar co-sponsored Youth Law Fair 2000 on Saturday, April 29, at the D.C. courthouse. The fair’s programs and exhibits were attended by more than 250 teenagers and parents. The fair’s theme was “Teaching D.C. Youth and their Parents about their Rights, Responsibilities and the Justice System.” Informative educational programs and exhibits were offered throughout the day. In the afternoon, tours of a courtroom, jail cells and judge’s chambers were filled to capacity. Youth speak-out sessions on the causes of teen violence kicked off and closed the fair.

Activity Narrative:

Due to several heinous acts of crime involving local young people in recent years, seven District of Columbia Bar Sections and three local voluntary bar associations decided to take the initiative to help youth in the area to better understand the law and prevent crimes. After several group planning sessions, a fair with the theme of “Teaching D.C. Youth and their Parents about their Rights and Responsibilities and the Justice System” was selected as the best approach. The objective of the Youth Law Fair was to bring District of Columbia young people (ages 13-21) and their parents and the juvenile justice system together in a positive, resource-oriented setting.
