Interview on Law Day Program of the Alaska Court System
(2000)
Last year, the Alaska Supreme Court asked every judicial officer in Alaska to clear
court calendars on May 1, 2000 and invite children to come to their courtroom or travel to
a local school to speak with students.
Best Things About this Program:
The program reached into communities throughout the state and provided law-related
educational programs in schools and districts that previously had little or no contact
with the courts, explains Stephanie Cole, Administrative Director for the Alaska
Court System.
Secrets of Our Success:
Commitment and encouragement from the states highest court, local coordination
efforts through administrative personnel who could ascertain each school districts
needs and tailor local programs to meet them, and provision of tools (scripts, talking
points, etc.) to judges to assist them with their presentations.
How-to Advice:
Court calendars are often filled months in advance, so begin work early if you want good
judicial participation.
